Entrepreneur and New York Times best-selling author Chip Conley is on a mission to re-create business culture to make it more psychologically sound. He’s crunched the numbers: there is significant research showing that companies with a sense of mission and purpose beyond the bottom line are actually more profitable in the long-run.

That’s why Saybrook University, the global center for Humanistic scholarship, is pleased to name Conley to a second term as its “Scholar-Practitioner in Residence.”

As the 2013 Scholar-Practitioner in Residence, Conley will work with Saybrook faculty, staff, and students to find new ways to apply and expand his work on the psychology of business and entrepreneurship in the 21st century. Conley’s work is based on the research of Abraham Maslow, one of the founders of the Humanistic movement in psychology, who taught at Saybrook. His first best-selling book was “PEAK: How Great Companies Get Their Mojo from Maslow.”

In 2013 Conley will work with Saybrook’s own staff to create a new “culture of employment” at the 40-year-old university, as well as conducting outreach to the business community to explore ways they can benefit from the findings of Humanistic psychology.

“I often ask business leaders this simple question: ‘If your business didn’t exist, would it matter to the world?’” said Conley. “Companies that can answer ’yes’ are far more likely to bring out the best in their employees and excel in the marketplace. A sense of meaning is crucial for a successful business in the 21st century – and that means going beyond the platitudes to find the mission that employees and customers really care about.”

As the founder of Joie de Vivre Hotels, Conley can speak from experience, having turned his initial purchase of a run-down San Francisco motel into the second largest boutique hotel company in the U.S. Now a best-selling author and sought after speaker, Conley is a committed philanthropist who serves on the boards of the Burning Man Project, Youth Speaks, and the Esalen Institute. His most recent book is “Emotional Equations: Simple Truths for Creating Happiness + Success,” and he is a contributor to Huffington Post and writes his own blog at http://www.chipconley.com.

Saybrook University President Mark Schulman said he is “delighted that Chip has re-upped with us as Scholar-Practitioner in Residence. We look forward to working with him on several exciting projects and I’m already looking beyond 2013 to see what Chip and Saybrook can do next!”

Saybrook University, which awarded Conley an honorary doctorate in 2009, is the world’s premier institution for humanistic scholarship and research. Located in San Francisco, California, and Seattle, Washington, Saybrook offers advanced degrees in psychology, mind-body medicine, organizational systems, leadership, and human science.
