Psychophysiological interventions and techniques can help ease reliance on medication by teaching the body to heal itself. For example, someone with chronic tension headaches could use Biofeedback Therapy to focus on relieving muscle tension for long-term relief instead of reaching for an over-the-counter medication as a quick fix.
Elite athletes may also apply some of these same techniques to reach optimal levels of performance. For example, an Olympic snowboarder may use deep breathing and hypnosis techniques to increase focus during qualifying and medal rounds.
Some interventions can even be applied to help students focus in school or employees and executives at work. Research determining the applications of this field are still in relatively early stages, and its potential for expansion is immense.
