Psychophysiological interventions and techniques can help ease reliance on medication by teaching the body to heal itself. For example, someone with chronic tension headaches could use Biofeedback Therapy to focus on relieving muscle tension for long-term relief instead of reaching for an over-the-counter medication as a quick fix.

Elite athletes may also apply some of these same techniques to reach optimal levels of performance. For example, an Olympic snowboarder may use deep breathing and hypnosis techniques to increase focus during qualifying and medal rounds.

Some interventions can even be applied to help students focus in school or employees and executives at work. Research determining the applications of this field are still in relatively early stages, and its potential for expansion is immense. Our faculty and advisers for the psychophysiology programs are true experts in the field and have more than 800 research-based publications in leading peer reviewed journals.

Graduates of our psychophysiology M.S. and Ph.D. degree programs will gain a comprehensive understanding of the foundations of psychophysiology and use this to make active contributions that continue to grow awareness about the benefits of psychophysiological techniques in health care.
