Student scholarships available

Saybrook is now accepting applications from students for several high-profile scholarships offered directly from the university.

They include:

The Rollo May Scholarship:  this $5,000 scholarship is awarded to a student of any of Saybrook University’s three colleges whose graduate work explicitly applies and extends the existential-humanistic contributions of Rollo May. Student work may include scholarship in the areas of personality theory, psychotherapy, art and literature, cultural criticism, existential encounters, or other topics clearly connected to the Rollo May tradition.

Applications should include a cover letter and up to 25 double-spaced pages of student writing making the connection between Rollo May’s work and that of the student.  Materials may consist of excerpts from the student’s dissertation proposal, candidacy essays, or papers for courses, integrated into one document of 25 pages or less.

For more information, contact Tom Greening ([email protected]).  The deadline is January 31, 2011.

The Alan Watts Scholarship:  This $7,000 scholarship (which may be divided among multiple winners) is awarded to students in the Graduation College of Psychology and Humanistic Studies who propose scholarly research, writing of publishable quality, or some innovative but comparable project on a subject related to the life and work of Alan Watts. Watts’ writings covered a diverse number of topics ranging from the wisdom found in traditional cultures, Eastern philosophy, and meditative disciplines to the interdependence of human beings and the natural world, the social construction of the “ego,” and the paradoxical nature of such dualities as good/evil, female/male, and the present/eternity.

The Fund was established by the families of former Saybrook Presidents Gerald Bush and Rudy Melone. Students who have completed been enrolled for at least two years in Saybrook’s Graduate College of Psychology and Humanistic Studies and have completed at least 21 units are eligible to apply.
