
The goal of the Summer of Peace 2012 is to activate the largest global commitment to peace in one season in the history of humankind. The Summer of Peace 2012 is produced by The Shift Network in partnership with Pathways to Peace, Culture of Peace Initiative (CPI), The Peace Alliance, PeaceDayTV, Alliance for Peacebuilding, Gaiafield Project, International Cities of Peace and Push4Peace, along with numerous co-sponsors. Together, the goal is to mobilize grassroots participation of people worldwide to accelerate humanity’s shift to a culture of peace.
July 6th is Nonviolence Friday of the Summer of Peace, and the Bay Area nonprofit Metta Center is co-hosting an online summit. Nonviolence has relevance to forgiveness, communication, education and almost every aspect of life and every theme of peace being explored during the Summer of Peace.
10:00am PST – The Science of Nonviolence
Michael Nagler and Stephanie Van Hook have invited some of the world’s leading practitioners of nonviolence for three sessions that will walk us through the history and current application of nonviolence today. In their first session, they will give attendees an overview of how nonviolence works.
12:00pm PST – Challenging the Military-Industrial Complex: Nonviolence Today
Tal Palter-Palman of the Metta Center, and Kathy Kelly of Voices for Creative Nonviolence Tal Palter-Palman and Kathy Kelly are champions of nonviolence. They will look at the history of nonviolence, the growth the military-industry, and a potential future for creating a culture of peace.

Mel Duncan, Co-founder of Nonviolent Peaceforce, and Dr. Mubarak Awad, Founder of the Palestinian Center for the Study of Nonviolence
Mel Duncan and Mubarak Awad are two of the leading practitioners of nonviolence in the world today. In this session, they will give us on-the-ground insights into how nonviolence is being applied in difficult situations including Israel-Palestine, Sudan and beyond.
