School of Mind-Body Medicine faculty member John Patterson will speak on Mindfulness on June 27 (5:30 PM Pacific) in Videoconference.

“Look at every path closely and deliberately. Try it as many times as you think necessary. Then ask yourself, and yourself alone, one question … Does this path have a heart?  If it does, the path is good; if it doesn’t it is of no use. Both paths lead nowhere; but one has a heart, the other   doesn’t. One makes for a joyful journey; as long as you follow it, you are one with it. The other will make you curse your life. One makes you strong; the other weakens you.”  The Teachings of Don Juan, Carlos Casteneda

Faculty and students in Saybrook’s School of Mind Body Medicine are participating in a transformational process that is expanding the biomedical model that has dominated health care, medicine and mental health for the last century. There have been many trail blazers of mind body medicine’s philosophy, knowledge and procedures, many of whom have been associated with Saybrook from its inception. As we follow these professional paths with gratitude, we will modify, refine and extend them. We will develop pedagogical, research and clinical approaches that draw from these historic roots and speak to today’s needs and challenges.
Though I did not realize it at the time, I was fortunate to be primed for mind body medicine as an eventual career during an undergraduate degree in psychology in the 1960’s. My personal and professional life has been informed by research in health behaviors, positive psychology, lifestyle    medicine, primary care and the holistic paradigm of mind-body-spirit-earth. My colleagues have almost uniformly felt a fundamental relevance of this paradigm to self care and clinical practice, yet they have largely held fast to the biomedical model.

This webinar will offer reflections from my journey of growing eyes to see, ears to hear, a tongue to speak, hands to touch and a heart to  share with colleagues, patients and students. This process of emergence of professional identity is lifelong. We must inform one another as we seek to walk our individual and collective paths with heart in mind body medicine.

John Patterson is a family physician and educator, board certified in family medicine and   integrative medicine.
He is past president of the Kentucky Academy of Family Physicians and practiced family medicine for over 30 years in rural, medically underserved Kentucky. This solo family doctor experience was truly a path with heart and included managing a medical office, admitting to a local 23 bed hospital and nursing home, making house calls, staffing a public health cancer screening clinic and volunteering as countyhospice medical director. This was accompanied by active participation in organized medicine, public health advocacy and medical student wellness education.

He is on faculty at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine, the University of Louisville School of Medicine, Saybrook University’s School of Mind Body Medicine and the Center for Mind Body Medicine.

John Patterson’s work with patients, students and health professionals emphasizes a holistic perspective integrating mind, body, spirit and the environment.
